The founder, William Peplow established the family business in 1818 in Wellington, Shropshire. He was a watchmaker and clockmaker and several of his longcase clocks are still in working service today. He died aged 100 years and 8 months.
His son William, a watchmaker and skilled engraver succeeded him and moved the business to Mealcheapen Street in Worcester in about 1850. By 1852 he had moved to Stourbridge, where Peplow’s still have a jewellers shop. William’s son, William Henry, the third generation was also a craftsman watchmaker working in Stourbridge with his wife Ada. Together they built up the shop as watchmakers and jewellers.
By 1928 the business was sufficiently well established for son William Augustus and daughters Gladys and Vera to all be involved in the business including a new outlet in Halesowen. William, known as Gus, also qualified as an optician and opened optical departments in both shops.
Gus married Helen in 1929 and their two children, Sarah and Richard also joined the family business, which by this time had further branches in Kidderminster and Worcester. The Worcester shop previously belonged to G.H. Hunt. Jewellers.
The fifth generation, son Richard, trained in Switzerland for a year before joining his sister Sarah in 1956 in the Worcester shop. Both Sarah and Richard became qualified Gemmologists and holders of the Diamond Diploma.
The 6th generation, William Francis, joined the family business in 1989 after training with two leading British jewellers in Nottingham and Liverpool, followed by a Management course in Switzerland, further experience in France and nearly a year in the United States with one of America’s leading jewellers, Mayor’s of Florida.
Today the Worcester and Stourbridge shops remain as Peplow’s two outlets concentrating on a variety of watch brands as well as exclusive ranges of diamond jewellery and other branded lines.
The Peplows of today are still passionate about everything they do. They have boundless enthusiasm and energy for the jewellery trade that is infectious. They love talking about what they do, its not merely a job, its their way of life.
Peplow’s staff are continually being trained and have a wide product knowledge of gold, diamond jewellery, watches and gems. They are encouraged to undertake training through the National Association of Goldsmiths and the Company of Master Jewellers.
Peplow’s are Members of the National Association of Goldsmiths and a Member of The Company of Master Jewellers.
Francis Peplow concludes “Our family have always worked hard to ensure the happiness and satisfaction of their customers. Purchasing fine jewellery is a personal and treasured moment, which requires extensive knowledge, expertise and professionalism”
